ATMs to start charging consumers
Which? issue response to planned ATM charges
In response to today's news that Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs) bought from HBOS will start charging customers to withdraw their money, Laurence Baxter, Senior Policy Adviser, Which?, said: "This news is deeply disturbing. It confirms our worst suspicions that ATM charges are being gradually reintroduced through the back door and fear it may give other banks licence to follow suit. "It's also further evidence, if it were needed, of certain banks shirking their social responsibilities of ensuring that all people have free and convenient access to their own money. For example, only last week it emerged that some banks are failing to provide basic bank accounts that meet standards set down by the Banking Code. "This latest development increases the risk many of these new charging machines will be in places where basic and affordable banking services are most needed. "We're very pleased that the Treasury Select Committee enquiry into cash machines will investigate this particular issue next month." Financial News Feeds provided by OneCompare.com
