Tis the season to be cautious says Post Office car insurance

December is the riskiest month for drivers according to statistics released by Post Office car insurance.

Last December there were 5558* car accident claims recorded, peaking at 258 in a single day. While December is the month with the most accidents, August is officially the safest - with fewer people on the roads, and safer road conditions.

"December has always been a dangerous month to drive in - the days are shorter and darker, plus dangerous weather conditions such as fog, ice and storms make driving particularly hazardous," says Mike Smith, Head of Marketing at the Post Office.

Before hitting the road we recommend drivers take the following precautions:

  • Defrost your car thoroughly;
  • Ensure your car is serviced regularly;
  • Don’t drive if you’re tired;
  • Avoid driving the morning after - you may feel ok, but still be over the limit;
  • Take care on icy roads;
  • Beware windscreen glare from the winter sun.

Consumers can apply for car insurance by telephone on 0800 169 6500 or online at www.postoffice.co.uk/motor.
