New Research by NatWest Black Credit Card Reveals the Nations Ultimate Christmas

The appeal of a traditional white Christmas is fast declining according to new research from NatWest Black Credit Card, the credit card for high-net worth individuals. Half of all Brits (50%) would far rather spend a sunny Christmas in Mustique, drinking champagne while Robbie Williams entertains them and Jamie Oliver cooks their dinner. However it seems there’s one tradition we won’t give up - Christmas turkey.

Having investigated how people would choose to celebrate the ‘Ultimate Christmas’ NatWest Black Credit Card’s survey found:

  • Luxury Caribbean island, Mustique, is the top ideal destination for a Christmas break this year closely followed by Mauritius.
  • Colder luxury destinations are distinctly unpopular; only half as many people (26%) would like to be the Snow King and Queen at Sweden’s Ice Hotel.
  • Robbie Williams (48%), Kylie (38%) and the classical Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (36%) are the most popular entertainment for festive parties. Bottom of the list are Charlotte Church (20%) and the English National Ballet (27%).
  • A James Bond Aston Martin Vanquish is the ultimate Christmas present for men (53%) but women love fast cars too - 40% would choose a BMW .
  • The British love affair with property continues as women favour an exclusive property, either a castle in Scotland or a Holland Park mansion (42%). As their ultimate Christmas present, this also came second on the men’s wish list (43%).
  • Boys toys appeal to women too; surprisingly both men and women cited a state of the art Bang and Olufsen Plasma Screen TV as their third choice, proving that technology is no longer a male domain.
  • A family portrait by Mario Testino, photographer of the stars, is far more popular with women (20%) than a Gucci handbag (6%) or Jimmy Choo shoes (8%), showing a move away from frivolous fashion items to those things with more personal value.
  • The naked chef Jamie Oliver is the most popular person to cook Christmas dinner (29%) beating Anthony Worrall Thompson (12%), Delia Smith (10%) and Rick Stein (6%). As you might imagine more men than women would like Nigella Lawson to cook their Christmas dinner.
  • Brits stick with tradition as far as food is concerned – the vast majority want a roast Norfolk turkey with all the trimmings (77%) far ahead of lobster (39%), white truffles (35%) and Beluga caviar (15%).
  • Dom Perignon champagne is the favoured drink to toast Christmas with (51%).
  • Down to earth Linda Barker (26%) and exclusive Jasper Conran (20%) are the favourite interior designers to make your house a Christmas idyll this year.

Kerry Savage, Professional Life Coach, commented “The survey reflects some interesting social trends. In recent years, we have seen a strong movement towards spiritualism, for example, Pilates and Kabbalah are the new past-times of the wealthy. Yet despite this, people evidently still want to spend money on themselves so these two, seemingly conflicting, mind-sets actually co-exist within us simultaneously. It’s clear that in an increasingly stressful society, we feel that we’ve worked hard all year round and deserve to be treated.

“Likewise we see that with the increase in single households, there is a definite move away from the traditional unit with set gender-specific roles. As the boundaries get ever more blurred, we are seeing women opt for the stereotypically ‘male’ gifts like cars and state-of-the-art home entertainment.”

Fay Hogg of NatWest Black Credit Card, commented: “NatWest Black Credit Card customers appreciate the finer things in life, so we wanted to find out what Brits consider to be the ultimate Christmas – from the setting and gifts, to the most extravagant food and drink. It seems that no one is really dreaming of a White Christmas and we’d all prefer a Caribbean Christmas! Our ideas about treating ourselves seem to be veering ever more to the practical gifts that hold their value and could be seen as investments.”
